James Batchelor & Collaborators

Bloom

Bloom is a work created for and with the Quantum Leapers, celebrating their growth as artists and the bonds that have been forged through this process. It started with 3 days of intergenerational exchange with James and collaborating guest artists from various stages of their careers from emerging to established. This formed the foundation of a new way of working for the dancers, guided by James’ process yet determined as a collective. This supported remarkable self discoveries for the dancers, and an unfolding of the question; what moves us?

Bloom draws on James' research in the lineage of Ausdruckstanz (expressive dance) in Australia —a 20th-century European dance movement that emphasised personal expression over technical formality. This follows the legacy of Gertrud Bodenwieser, who fled Vienna in 1938 and profoundly shaped Australian modern dance. James traces this lineage through former Artistic Director of QL2 Dance Ruth Osborne, who was a student of and later teacher in the Bodenwieser method. The piece becomes a powerful tribute to intergenerational transmission, danced connection, and the enduring expressive spirit of movement.
